Bernardsville's Fall Calendar Is Carrying Two Anniversaries That Have Nothing to Do With Each Other

On October 10, a costumed version of George Washington leads a walking tour out of Ristorante MV to mark America's 250th. It is being organized by Revolutionary Crawls and Events, not by the Borough.

A Very Different Kind of Local Pride

The Revolutionary Crawl looks backward, and theatrically so. Organized by Revolutionary Crawls and Events as part of the national America's 250th commemoration, the event sends General Washington and Dr. Franklin, played by costumed interpreters, through three stops around town: The Bernardsville Inn, Restaurant MV and Claremont Tavern. At each one, guests get a 20 to 30 minute theatrical presentation along with food and drink woven into the storytelling. The organizers describe it plainly: "part town tour, part history lesson, part party — and totally unforgettable."

Revolutionary Crawls & Events will make its Bernardsville debut on Saturday, October 10, from 12:30–3:30 PM. For the past 10 years, the company has created immersive historical experiences, and it began in the Lambertville–New Hope area. It now produces historical pub crawls, dinners, private events and other immersive experiences throughout New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Far from a traditional history tour, the experience blends fascinating local history, humor, audience interaction, great restaurants, cocktails and plenty of fun.

Ristorante MV: Celebrity Dining in a Historic Tavern

Ristorante MV is housed in The Old Stone Hotel, which was established in the center of town and served as an inn and tavern. The hotel opened in 1849 under the ownership of John Beck, who died the following year. Its original footprint was smaller than what exists today, but it is one of the few remaining structures in Bernardsville from the mid-1800s that has retained its historic fabric. The rear frame addition was made in the 1890s, and the dormers and porch in the early 20th century. Under several names, most notably Doty’s, Freddy’s, and the Bernardsville Hotel, this landmark has continued to operate as a hospitality establishment with little disruption since the mid-1800's.

Today it is a four-year-old Italian restaurant opened by a Brooklyn father-son team, Pasquino and Michael Vitiello, that has quietly become a celebrity dining room, with regulars and reservation requests reportedly including Eli Manning and Kevin Jonas among others, according to a New Jersey 101.5 report. The restaurant's own history, as covered by the Bernards High School student paper when it opened in 2021, involved bringing over three-fourths of its staff from Brooklyn and butchering veal in-house.

So on October 10, guests will gather at a restaurant known for celebrity sightings and modern scratch-kitchen cooking, and then walk out the door to follow two Founding Fathers to The Bernardsville Inn and Claremont Tavern, around a town most of them drive through without a second thought. That juxtaposition, a 2026 celebrity hotspot as the launch pad for an 18th-century reenactment, is the kind of detail that doesn't show up on a tourism brochure. The building's history as an old tavern is part of that juxtaposition, and the crawl starts there.

If you're weighing whether to circle October 10, it's the one where you might find yourself standing in a doorway on Mill Street listening to a man in a tricorn hat explain why this particular stop mattered in 1776, before walking back into a restaurant that opened four years ago and somehow already has a reputation.
